When’s the Best Time To Schedule a Chimney Sweep?
You might know that scheduling annually is the recommended approach to chimney sweeping, but when should this maintenance take place? Most put off their chimney sweep services until fall or winter, but we recommend booking earlier – preferably in the spring or summer months. Here’s why:
- We can service your chimney faster, before the busy season and at a time that works best for your schedule.
- That creosote odor that’s known to sift through your home over the summer can be avoided with a thorough cleaning.
- You’ll know early on if you need to replace or repair your fireplace – and we’ll be able to easily schedule you during this slower time of year.
- Many fireplace repairs, such as tuckpointing or crown repair, use materials that need to cure in a certain temperature, making spring an ideal time to get it done.
- You’ll start the fireplace season with a clean chimney and peace of mind, ensuring you can quickly and easily get a fire going as soon as cold weather hits.

Why Should I Have My Chimney Cleaned Annually?
Improper ventilation causes combustible creosote – a sticky residue formed when the particles in smoke condense and cool – to build up and increase the chance of a chimney fire that could damage your chimney and eventually spread into your house. In addition, debris buildup, animal invasion, and nesting materials create fire hazards and reduce efficiency levels.
How long does the chimney sweeping process take?
Typically, the entire service takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Once creosote is removed, our insured and Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) certified technicians will then sweep the chimney flue and smoke chamber with chimney brushes to make sure your chimney is up to code and fire safe.
Is It Messy To Have Your Chimney Cleaned?
We get it – clearing soot out of a chimney can seem like a messy process. And if you’ve ever seen Mary Poppins, then you’re probably even more concerned about us leaving behind a mess and tracking black soot throughout your home.
No worries, though. Being unobtrusive and keeping your home and property as clean as possible is critical to us. Here’s what we do to keep your home protected:
- We blanket the inspection area with tarps.
- We wear protective shoe covers so no soot is tracked onto the floor.
- We use a powerful commercial vacuum to collect and contain any dust and debris that’s loosened during cleaning.
What about fireplace stains? Can we remove those?
Yes! We specialize in fireplace stain removal near Tulsa – and can do it without using dangerous chemicals with noxious odors, thanks to a great product called Paint “N” Peel. Paint “N” Peel is a fireplace cleaner that’s environmentally friendly and free of harsh fumes. It’s designed to remove stains from a variety of fireplace surfaces, including brick, slate, stone, marble, tile, concrete, limestone, and cultured stone.
Here’s how it works: Paint “N” Peel is brushed onto the stained surface, just as if you were applying a fresh coat of paint to the hearth. Once the product is correctly applied, it dries into a rubbery film. Then, 24-48 hours after application, the product can then be quite literally peeled away from the hearth surface, taking all those ugly smoke and soot stains with it. It’s as easy as that.
What Is Creosote? Why Is It Dangerous?
Creosote is a highly flammable substance that forms as a byproduct of burning wood. It accumulates on the walls of your chimney as you burn fires, and it can pose serious risks if left unchecked. Regular chimney cleaning and maintenance are crucial for preventing creosote buildup and ensuring the safety of your household.
There are three levels of creosote:
- Level 1 (Light & Flaky): This is the mildest form of creosote. It appears as a light, powdery soot that coats the inside of the chimney. Level 1 creosote is usually easy to manage. However, if left unaddressed, it can eventually lead to more severe forms of creosote buildup.
- Level 2 Hardened & Tar-Like): At this stage, creosote becomes darker, harder, and stickier, turning into a tar-like substance that adheres more firmly to the chimney walls. Removing Level 2 creosote typically requires specialized tools, such as rotary loops, drills, and stiff brushes. These tools are designed to break through the tough, hardened layers.
- Level 3 (Glazed & Thick): This is the most dangerous and severe form of creosote. At Level 3, creosote becomes a thick, glazed, and hardened substance that typically has a shiny, glossy appearance. Level 3 creosote is extremely difficult to remove with traditional cleaning methods like brushes, rotary loops, or drills, usually requiring specialized solutions or products. Fortunately, we have glazed creosote removal services and can get your system back into tip-top shape.

Can Glazed (Level 3) Creosote Be Removed?
Yes, you’ll just want to make sure you hire an expert in the chimney industry who uses the proper tools, methods, and products. Otherwise, you could risk harming your chimney further or paying for a job that’s not done right (and still leaves your home at risk).
Fortunately, the professionals at Comfort Class offer glazed creosote removal services throughout Tulsa and Skiatook. We use specialized methods and Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR) to safely and thoroughly remove this stubborn, tar-like buildup.
Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR) works by dissolving and absorbing the creosote. Then, as it dries, it loses its adhesive properties, causing it to detach from the flue walls. The remaining material can then be easily removed through standard chimney sweeping methods.
What Should I Do if There Are Animals in My Chimney?
Aside from creosote and soot, what else could be dirtying up and clogging your chimney? Nesting animals and birds! If birds are having a hard time finding a hollow tree or safe nesting area, they can mistake a chimney for an ideal spot to hunker down.
If you find that you have animals in your chimney, Comfort Class can help. We remove living and dead birds and animals, as well as clean, disinfect, and deodorize the chimney so you can continue to use it as safely as possible.
The one exception is animals that are protected, like the chimney swift. These endangered birds find the vertical wall of your flue to be an ideal spotting for building their nests, but since they’re smaller in numbers nowadays, removing them or their young is against the law. This means, we’ll have to wait until they leave on their own before removing their nests.
We’ll also figure out how the critters got it, then implement preventive measures to ensure similar incidents can’t recur down the line. Typically, this means installing a new chimney cap, a component that sits at the top of your flue and is designed to protect the chimney against leaks, animal and bird invasion, and downdrafts.
How Do You Know When It’s Time To Clean Your Chimney?
A mistake many homeowners make is waiting until there’s an obvious problem – like smoke entering the house – to call a professional chimney sweep. That’s not usually the safest or the most cost-effective option.
To enjoy a safer, more pleasurable fireside experience and keep costly repairs at bay, an annual inspection and sweeping is recommended, regardless of the presence of obvious problems.
During an inspection, an experienced specialist will examine the chimney for creosote, flue blockages, leaks, and damage – and we’ll let you know if you’re overdue for a cleaning or repairs.
However, if you’re wondering if it’s time to clean your chimney and you haven’t yet scheduled an inspection, you can check for dangerous creosote buildup and flue blockages yourself. Put on goggles and a dust mask, grab a flashlight and a fireplace poker, and begin the investigation. If you see soot buildup greater than 1/8”, it’s time to start thinking about a chimney cleaning. If you spot creosote 1/4” or thicker, DO NOT use your fireplace again until the entire system has been cleaned.
