What Is HeatShield® Liner Repair?

Have you been told that your flue liner has a few cracked tiles here and there? Have you spotted flakes and pieces of your clay tile liner in your fireplace? Liner damage is nothing to ignore, but is the only solution really a full tear down and reline? That seems excessive and costly, especially if only one or two tiles are a fire hazard.

HeatShield® is a revolutionary system that can be used to repair and restore cracked or damaged clay tile or terra cotta chimney liners, without the expense, mess, or hassle of a tear out or the investment in a totally new liner. All three system applications carry a 20-year material warranty.

How Do the 3 HeatShield® Relining Systems Work?

Here’s how the systems work and how we use them to restore chimney liner safety and performance for our clients in Tulsa, Skiatook, and the neighboring areas:

The Joint Repair Option

Frequently, we find that the really rough areas in a clay tile liner are the mortar joints between the tiles. These can gap, shift, crack, and create dangerous voids that can allow the transfer of smoke, ash, embers, heat, and carbon monoxide. With HeatShield®’s joint repair option, we can take care of this type of damage quickly and affordably.

We start by cleaning and prepping the flue, and then we use a custom applicator blade to push the HeatShield® Cerfractory Flue Sealant into the voids, cracks, gaps, and holes. Once the product is sufficiently applied, the applicator blade is used to smooth over the surface to ensure an airtight, effective repair.

The Resurfacing Or “Slip Casting” Option

The resurfacing option is a great fix for clay tile flues with more than just a crack or gap here and there.

Once again, we start by cleaning and prepping the flue. Next, we place a custom applicator plug at the bottom of the flue. We then pull the foam applicator plug up through the flue, allowing it to apply the HeatShield® Cerfractory Flue Sealant as it moves. As it smooths over the surface, the applicator plug presses the sealant into the gaps, holes, cracks, and voids, leaving behind a smooth, sealed, freshly cast flue liner.

The Full Relining Option

The relining option is a great choice for flue liners that are so damaged they’re actually weakened. How does it work?

We start by cleaning and prepping the flue, and then use the foam applicator plug to coat the flue in a layer of HeatShield® Cerfractory Flue Sealant. Once applied, we insert a CeCure® sleeve (a ceramic and stainless steel mesh liner sleeve) into the flue, and run the applicator plug through again to press the sleeve into the Cerfractory Flue Sealant.

Next, a layer of sealant is applied to the inner side of the CeCure® sleeve. This leaves the flue strong, insulated, and restored.

No matter which application makes sense for you, we think you’ll be absolutely thrilled with the results. Using our video scanning equipment, we’ll show you a before and after of your chimney so you can see what a big difference such a small amount of time can make, thanks to HeatShield®.
